UK rejects call for petrol cars to be banned from city centres

The UK has rejected proposals from the EU for petrol and diesel powered cars to be banned from city centres by 2050.

The European Commission plans to force out conventionally fuelled vehicles from city centres, and only allow cars powered by alternative means, such as electricity or hydrogen fuel cells.

EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas insisted that the proposals would not mean that people were inconvenienced though, saying: “Freedom to travel is a basic right for our citizens. Curbing mobility is not an option. Nor is business as usual.”

“The widely-held belief that you need to cut mobility to fight climate change is simply not true. We can break the transport system’s dependence on oil without sacrificing its efficiency and compromising mobility.”

However, the UK has no plans to join in on the plan, with transport minister Norman Baker saying the EU should not be involved in individual cities’ choices.

“We will not be banning cars from city centres anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas,” he said.

The EU sees the idea as contributing to its plan of cutting carbon emissions by 60 percent. Kallas also proposed a 40 percent cut in shipping emissions, 40 percent use of low carbon fuels in aviation, and a 50p percent shift in middle distance journeys by both passengers and freight from road to rail and other modes.

Bugatti Veyron News: Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – Car and Driver

The Bugatti Veyron is (still) the world’s fastest production car, having just wrested the crown from itself in a successful world-record attempt. On Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track just outside of Wolfsburg, Bugatti’s official test driver got the new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport to hit a two-way average speed of 268 mph. That terminal velocity eclipses the original

coupe’s by 15 mph. It’s faster, all right, and conditions on Saturday allowed a top speed higher than the Bugatti team was even expecting—they forecasted a conservative, and utterly tame by comparison, 264 mph.

Production versions of the Super Sport will have their top speed electronically limited to 258 mph, in order to protect the tires from certain, expedient death. To achieve that higher velocity, the car has undergone a pretty significant aerodynamic rework, with the most obvious change being the removal of the steamship-esque silver air intakes. They’ve been replaced by a pair of roof-mounted NACA ducts, and the roof itself has been extended rearward to mostly obscure the W-16 engine, which itself has been tweaked. The four turbos are larger, as are the intercoolers that feed them. Output is now 1200 hp (up from the cooler-sounding 1001) and 1106 lb-ft of torque (an increase of 184 lb-ft). Better breathing is facilitated by a new front fascia with larger openings, and there’s a double diffuser in the rear that incorporates twin center-mounted exhaust tips in place of the “regular” Veyron’s single, squared-off outlet.

The suspension also has been modified, with longer spring travel, stiffer anti-roll bars, and new dampers. Bugatti claims to be using a new structure for the carbon-fiber monocoque that increases torsional rigidity while reducing weight. And speaking of carbon fiber, Bugatti says it will offer the Super Sport with all of its body panels clear-coated to showcase the weave. The record-setting car, seen here, makes extended use of the cleared carbon, underlining it with orange accents; the first five Super Sports (which are already spoken for) are outfitted to match, called the World Record Edition.

About that name: Super Sport is a suffix that has traditionally been associated with Chevy’s cars, and recently we’ve seen variations of it applied to Bentleys (the

) and Jaguars ( ). Based on this newfound popularity, we’re declaring “Super Sport” to be the new “Sport.” Expect the Koreans to co-opt it next.

The Super Sport will make its public debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. Production begins in the fall at Bugatti’s Molsheim Veyron hand-crafting facility. We’re waiting for the inevitable roadster version, which will have to be called Super Grand Sport. Pricing hasn’t been divulged, but if you have to ask, you’re not Super Rich enough, Sport.

The current is gorgeous, fast, and luxurious, but at over 3800 pounds, it’s not dainty. And the upcoming

for 2010, with the S5 coupe getting the new engine for 2011. These cars are claimed to achieve the same acceleration as the V-8 models while using 20 percent less fuel.

Still, any idiot knows you can only get so far with engine downsizing in a performance car that weighs more than two tons. So we sat down with Michael Dick, Audi’s global head of product engineering, and asked him about how he squares the company’s stated smaller-is-better credo with the reality of its hefty cars.

Crash Dieting We expected to hear some mumbo-jumbo about how safety standards and consumer expectations for features and refinement dictate ever-growing curb weights, but Dick’s response shocked us: Audi is currently testing a prototype of the next-generation S5 that weighs

880 pounds less than the current car. He outlined the ongoing increase in the use of aluminum, magnesium, and high-strength steel as a main reason behind the mass reduction. The current

‘s chassis is 69 percent aluminum, and the next-generation

(probably due in 2011 or 2012) will have an even higher proportion, Dick says. The amount for the next A4/A5/S4/S5 will be higher still when they debut, likely as 2014 models.

Dick also said that the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 is an "intermediate step" for Audi. The next S4 and S5 will have lighter turbocharged four-cylinder engines. We can look at the TT lineup for direction: the base TT in the U.S. has a 2.0-liter turbo four that makes 200 hp. The

has the same basic engine, but makes 265 hp with beefed up internals and a bigger turbo. Future S4 and S5 models will have about 20 percent less weight and up to 30 percent less engine displacement than the current S5, making combined fuel economy in the mid to high 20-mpg range likely.

Good Looks, Lofty Goals

Although Dick told us the existing S5 prototype uses the current car’s styling, we were able to get insight into the next car’s design from another company source, namely the

shown this year at the Detroit auto show. This "concept" isn’t a concept at all—it’s the Audi A7 that will debut later this year in production form. Company insiders tell us that while the car’s overall proportions won’t be used on other models, its sinister headlights, more-defined single-frame grille, and blade-like taillights will be defining graphic elements on the next generation of Audis.

So it will look good, and Dick claims that even with all the safety and luxury features of today’s car, it will weigh only 3000 pounds. He goes so far as to claim it laps Germany’s famed Nrburgring

Nordschleife eight seconds faster than the current S5. Skeptical? So are we. Industry sources tell us Audi hasn’t yet taken enough weight out of the car’s structure to achieve the stated goals, and we get the impression that Dick is telling us about the project to force his development team to make good on the claims. If you assume a car’s engineering must be completed three years before it goes into production, they only have a couple of years to achieve these aggressive targets. We wish them the best of luck.

:: Let me just say that I was inspired and at the same time, motivated, by Marcus Baker’s recent post, “Motivated Versus Inspired Blogging,” to proceed and continue with my topic about writing articles.

(Thanks, Marcus! I believe that this is a continuing discussion on inspiration vs motivation, too! :) )

From where we left off, I talked about keywords, especially long-tail keywords or narrow keywords as opposed to short-tail keywords or broad keywords, to jumpstart a writer to get things going. Hopefully, once you have the targeted keywords that you want to zero-in on, you can now proceed with writing articles effortlessly. As per my experience, this technique really helps a lot because you are grounded to a particular topic and it’s like being akin to a horse with blinders, whose peripheral vision is purposely blocked, where you don’t get distracted by unnecessary things that pull you away from your focus. You just go on straight ahead! No making unnecessary stops and turns or detours.

The question that still needs to be answered, though, is: why would you want to start writing articles in the first place?
