It’s easy to spend Lincoln money on a Ford these days. And we’re not just talking about the Shelby GT500. The Taurus SHO, with Ford’s premium 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, starts at $38,545 and quickly reaches Lincoln MKS territory, though the EcoBoost MKS base price is some 10-large higher than the SHO. The top of seven trim levels for the F-150 is the Platinum edition, designed to take the place of the failed Lincoln Mk LT pickup. The F-150 Platinum was originally designed to be a new Lincoln pickup, until Ford decided not to make an extra truck grille.
Now comes the 2011 Ford Flex Titanium, a special package on top of the erstwhile high-end Limited trim level. It revives the early ’00′s word “bling.” The Titanium features a tuxedo black two-tone roof, blackout trim around the headlamps and taillamps and a black chrome finish grille with special badging on the leading edge of the hood, first seen at the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association show in Vegas, baby.
Inside, you’ll find swish Alcantara seat inserts (unlike Cadillac with its new CTS coupe, Ford apparently was willing to pay to use the Alcantara trademark), painted alloy metallic on the center stack and the door panels and illuminated scuff plates. The Titanium starts at $41,115, more than $11k higher than a base Flex. The EcoBoost Titanium starts at $45,960, higher than the Lincoln MKT base price, but below the EcoBoost MKT’s $49,975. One Web site went to the Ford Flex configurator and loaded the Titanium up to $54,491.Amateurs. We threw everything on to the Flex Titanium and came up with an MSRP of $57,074, or $1021 per month with $5559 down, at 7-percent over 60 months. That’s still short of a loaded MKT EcoBoost’s $61,782, but not by much. What’s going on, here?
One could look at the Flex, Taurus and F-150 pricing and come to the conclusion that the company is turning the tables on Henry Ford’s efforts to build automobiles affordable to the common consumer. Apart from those $20,000 Fiestas, of course. Or, one might think that Ford Motor Company, having shed Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo, and killed Mercury, is now is trying to make Lincoln redundant.That’s not the case, of course. Lincoln draws customers who would never consider a Ford, proof that the automotive class hierarchy first established by GM’s Alfred Sloan, is alive and well. Design differences between models like the Flex and MKT reflect the kind of distinct aesthetic for which all the GM divisions were known in their heyday. It’s Ford having its design-cake and eating it: the Flex has the kind of polarizing styling designers love to use to shake up the industry, and the MKT gets buyers who love the Flex package, but don’t like the design.

People who do these kinds of work should consider purchasing a commercial vehicle policy.
Do you need more liability coverage than a personal auto policy provides? Generally, a commercial auto policy offers higher limits of liability, but less or no coverage in areas that are typically not associated with commercial auto risks.
Do you need special coverage for situations encountered while conducting business? Commercial auto policies usually offer these coverages, and they’re normally not available with personal auto policies. These include hired and nonowned auto coverage and coverage for towing a trailer for business use.
Do you need to list any employees as drivers? Commercial auto policies allow you to list anyone that you employ. You don’t have that option with a personal auto policy. In general, you’ll need commercial auto coverage if the vehicle you use is owned by a corporate partnership or driven by employees, or if it’s used to haul tools or equipment weighing more than 500 pounds, make deliveries or heavy enough to require state or federal filings.
